Exams

What is the NCLEX-RN exam?
The NCLEX-RN (National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses) exam is your passport to obtain a registered nurse (RN) license and to practice your profession in the United States and Canada. This exam validates your knowledge and abilities to provide safe and effective healthcare. It consists of 85 to 150 questions, which must be answered correctly within 6 hours.
Do you have specific dates to start taking and taking the NCLEX exam?
The NCLEX has specific dates and times for each country, so they notify you of the available dates and times. In relation to the course process, this will depend on your availability. Ideally, as soon as you hire us, we evaluate your current level of English and if it is at least B1, you can start an intensive 6-month preparation period, which includes live synchronous classes with registered nurses in the USA and specialists in Intensive Care in the USA (CCRN) who will give you instructions on the content and strategy you need to be able to take the exam and pass it on your first attempt.
If I am already preparing for the NCLEX, do I have to cover the costs of taking the exam?
If you are a scholarship holder, we cover air tickets and the cost of the exam for your presentation (if you must take it in another city or country). If you are not a scholarship recipient, NCLEX will be covered by the payment you make in the program you have chosen and that fits your needs.
How long is the time limit for taking the NCLEX exam?
Once the Board approves you or gives you the ATT (Authorization to Test) to apply for the NCLEX, they give you around 90 days to program and perform it. Depending on the state, they give you a little more or less days, but it's usually 90 days.
What are the topics of the NCLEX-RN exam?
The NCLEX-RN exam covers the following general topics: care management and patient safety. Growth and development, disease prevention Emotional support and mental health Basic care, pharmacology and therapies, risk reduction and physiological adaptations. Not far from what you have studied for Nursing in your home country.
Does OnMyWay cover my ticket to take the NCLEX-RN exam?
Yes, as long as your performance and credentials meet the exclusive requirements for a scholarship. If you do not apply for a scholarship, the travel costs (air tickets, food and lodging) will be borne by you.
What is the ATT?
The ATT, or “Authorization to Test”, is a certificate that confirms that as a candidate you meet the requirements to take the NCLEX-RN. It is issued by the NCSBN and is required to register for the exam. This ATT is important because it ensures that you completed the necessary courses and hours of practice to be able to perform the NCLEX. In addition, there are many states that require you to have it so that you can enroll in the nurse registry.

Financial

How much does the program cost?
The cost of the OnMyWay program varies depending on the individual needs of each candidate. Factors such as the current level of English, the specific requirements for approval of the degree, and the preparation needed for the NCLEX-RN exam can influence the price. To get a personalized quote adapted to your situation, we invite you to schedule a free consultation with one of our advisors. We are committed to offering you a comprehensive plan that meets your goals and allows you to fulfill your dream of practicing as a nurse in the United States.
How much would you earn in dollars per month? How much does it cost to live in the United States?
Obviously, it depends on the state in which you're working and residing, but in general salaries range from $5,000 to $13,700 per month (the latter if you're a travel nurse). The cost of living will also vary from one state to another, with California, for example, being one of the places where you earn the best as a nursing professional, but the cost of living is also high.
Can I pay in local currency?
Yes, you can do it without problem. It's conditional on the payment methods you use depending on the country you're in.
What is the average salary for nurses in the United States?
On average, registered nurses in the U.S. earn between $80,000 and $100,000 annually, with higher salaries in states such as California and New York. However, salaries can vary widely depending on location, specialization, experience and type of facility, for example, there are cases where salaries reach $240,000 annually, such as nurse anesthesiologists (CRNAs).
What is the cost of living in different regions of the United States and how does it compare to my salary?
The cost of living can vary significantly. Cities like San Francisco and New York have high costs, but they also tend to offer higher salaries. Midwestern and southern states often have lower living costs. In general, wherever you decide to work, the cost of living (housing, education, transportation, food, leisure, basic care and technology) represents only 40% of nurses' salaries in the U.S., while in Latin America, the cost of living often exceeds the same wage. In the US, you can get the idea that you will be able to save more than half of your salary.

Visa and migration

Can I take my family with me and what are the visa implications for them?
Yes, you can bring your immediate family (spouse and children under 21) under the EB-3 visa as dependents. They will receive visas that will allow them to live and study in the U.S. and your spouse can apply for a 100% legal work permit.
What visa do I need to work as a nurse in the United States?
The most common visa for foreign nurses is the EB-3 visa, a permanent residence visa for skilled workers. To qualify, you must have a valid job offer from a U.S. employer that sponsors your visa and demonstrates that there are no qualified U.S. workers available for the job. However, don't worry, we'll take care of this.

Licenses, Approvals and Certifications

How do I transfer my nursing license to the United States?
You must obtain a license from the board of nursing in the state where you intend to work. This process generally involves verifying your foreign credentials with an international education evaluation service, passing the NCLEX-RN exam, and meeting specific state requirements, such as having passed a proficiency test in English (PTE, TOEFL, IELTS, or others), a criminal background check and continuing education.

Once you have a license from a state, for example, from FL (Florida Board of Nursing), and then you want to apply for a job offer in Texas, you must transfer your license, it doesn't mean you have to take the NCLEX-RN exam again, it's just paying an additional fee for the procedure. However, it's not something to worry about, we'll help you with our team of credentialing & endorsement experts.
Are there continuing educational requirements to maintain a nursing license in the United States?
Most states require continuing education units (CEUs) to renew nursing licenses periodically. These requirements vary by state and help ensure that nurses are kept up to date with medical practices. However, you don't have to worry, as this will be taken care of by your own employer and will be just one of your normal work tasks.
Can I get a nursing license without a Social Security Number (SSN)?
Some states allow obtaining a nursing license with an ITIN, instead of an SSN. It's crucial to research and understand the policies of the board of nurses in the state where you plan to work. In addition, consulting with an immigration attorney or educational counselor can provide specific and up-to-date guidance on how to navigate this process. And in this too, we can help you.
Can I keep my U.S. professional credentials if I return to my home country?
Yes, you can keep your U.S. nursing license active by participating in continuing education. If you want to return to work in the US, we just need to verify that everything is in order.
At what point does the process of approving a nursing degree begin?
The approval process begins with the legalization of your university degree, degree in nursing or Higher Technician in Nursing (3 years of academic studies).

Education

How is the process managed with the Expert Agent during the validation of the nursing degree?
The process of validating your degree with the expert agent in charge of your case will be managed mainly through the OnMyWay platform, through which we will keep in touch and we will ask you for the documents or advise you on the step by step to submit the necessary documentation throughout the validation process. If you need additional information, we will be asking you for it.
What are the requirements to apply for the scholarship?
Get two letters of recommendation from your university or your work and be a graduate or final year technical student (technical or technological studies) or a degree in nursing at these universities: University of Salvador - USAL, British Hospital, Italian Hospital, Catholic University - UCA, National University of Córdoba, German Hospital (in Argentina) or TecMilenio in Mexico.

Laboral

The demand for nurses varies, but states such as California, Texas, New York, Florida and Pennsylvania are often in high demand. Factors affecting demand include population size, aging demographics, and the concentration of healthcare facilities.

Specialties in high demand include geriatric nursing, critical care, emergency nursing, labor and surgical nursing. Advanced practice nurses, such as Nurse Practitioners, are also in high demand in several specialties.
What is the process for advancing my nursing career in the United States?
Continuing education and obtaining advanced certifications (such as master's degrees and doctorates) can improve career prospects and are very accessible to any professional in the United States. Many nurses seek extra education to become nurse practitioners or specialize in fields such as anesthesiology or pediatrics. In addition, all the health institutions where you work will provide you with free continuing education, as it is part of the requirements of the American health system.
Where can I find nursing communities in my country or region in the United States?
Social media groups, professional associations and community organizations often organize events and provide contact networks for nurses from specific countries or regions to connect and support each other.
If the hospital is not satisfied with my functions, can they revoke the contract? What can happen with my stay in the United States?

Does the same hospital/clinic that hires me train me?
Yes As soon as you enter the hospital or clinic, as a foreigner, you will be trained in general knowledge about how the hospital works, the management of patients and jobs, their values, cultural differences and more.
Is it possible to find vacancies in the United States as a nurse in administrative roles?
Yes, but you'll need to take a three-month course to apply for these positions in the U.S. (we facilitate this course), so we recommend that you play a non-administrative role at the beginning while you prepare and take the exam, already residing in the United States.
What are typical work hours for nurses in the United States?
Nurses in the U.S. typically work 12-hour shifts, typically three days a week for full-time positions. Some facilities also offer 8-hour shifts. Nurses should be prepared for rotating shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays, especially in hospitals and the extra pay per shift is around $540.
Are there professional nursing organizations I should join?
Joining organizations such as the American Nurses Association (ANA) or specific specialty groups can provide networking opportunities, professional development and other useful resources, but it's not a requirement.
What legal protections do I have as a foreign worker in the United States?
Foreign workers are protected by U.S. labor laws, just like a U.S. citizen, these include rights to fair pay, taking into account (Prevailing Wage), social security, safe working conditions, and freedom from discrimination and harassment.
What support services are available for foreign nurses who want to adapt to life in the United States?
Many hospitals and communities offer orientation programs, cultural assimilation workshops and professional development to help foreign nurses adapt to the U.S. health system and American culture.
If I want to change jobs, either because I don't like the specialty or the hospital isn't what I expected, do I have a penalty, can't do it, do I have to leave the country, do I have the same conditions in the United States?
If you decide to resign and that hospital is the sponsor of your visa, you must look for another sponsor within 90 days. In this case, we recommend that you take interviews without leaving your current job (and we will support you in this process). The demand for nurses in the U.S. is currently high, so it won't cost you much to find a new job.
What are employment contracts with healthcare institutions in the United States like and what benefits do they include?
The contracts are usually for an indefinite term and have benefits such as: health insurance, dental and vision plans, pension plans, vacations and permits; sick and maternity/paternity leave; educational assistance, bonuses and compensation; work flexibility, access to workshops, seminars and certification programs; wellness and mental health programs.

Life in the United States

How is the U.S. healthcare system different from other countries?
The U.S. healthcare system is complex, primarily private and insurance-based. Unlike many countries with universal healthcare, patients often need private insurance to cover healthcare costs, which can affect access to services and the nature of healthcare delivery. It is also often said that it is one of the most advanced health systems in the world, in terms of technologies and resources.
What support services are available for foreign nurses who want to adapt to life in the United States?
Many hospitals and communities offer orientation programs, cultural assimilation workshops, and professional development to help foreign nurses adapt to the U.S. healthcare system and American culture.
What are the main cultural differences when working in the United States?
All jobs in the U.S. place a high value on direct communication, punctuality and professionalism. There is a strong emphasis on patient rights and privacy, governed by laws such as HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act). Adapting to these rules can take time for nurses trained abroad, but it is very important to become informed about them as the time to emigrate approaches

Public transportation is available in major cities, but having a car is often necessary in suburban and rural areas.
